Happy New Year

Yes, it’s been that long since I’ve been around. Very busy these days, me. Sorry to all those people who posted the 20 comments that were pending. You’ve now been approved, even the mean one. I’ll try to come around more often.

Soda Heads or Soda Jerks?

You decide. Recently I posted that the Soda Heads were talking behind my back. I titled it sort of tongue in cheek, but really, what else can you call it? They were discussing me without inviting me to the discussion. I was amused, so I blogged about it. I was flattered when they came and posted here after I posted about them. Then I went back and read the rest of the conversation which included comments about how I should be flattered that they were talking about my post and that their conversation should be viewed as complimentary because they hadn’t called me a dumbass. One of them commented on my blog that they rarely post outside of Soda Heads anymore because they tend to get flamed. Really? I can’t imagine why.

Note to self: Write an article about how the grammar and writing of Twilight isn’t nearly as bad as a lot of bloggers on the interwebs. Work in the difference between “good” and “pleasing” in art.

Recommended reading for the Soda Heads: Benjamin Wheeler’s blog. I’m sure you’d get a kick out of it.

Talking Behind My Back

LOL! I had no idea this was going on. I just happened to notice I had 8 hits from this same referrer. For those of you who don’t want to follow the link this is a thread written by an Anti-Twilight group at SodaHead regarding my On Vampire Lore post. This post by Christine was particularly vexing to me:

I repsect the opinoin. But the whole time I kept saying to myself, “But vampires aren’t real”
and notice how she didn’t touch the subject that REAL vampires simply DO NOT sparkle in the sunlight! I’m almost positive no other vampire story or movie ever has. And that truly is degrading to the religion.

Yeah, I tried to look at this with an open mind, but this really didn’t have an effect on me anyway.

I of course have questions. Why didn’t they post on my blog? I have allowed posts from outside WordPress. Does Christine believe vampires real or not? Religion? I wonder if Christine was talking about Twilight or my post when she said she tried to look on it with an open mind and that it had no effect. Either way it had enough of an effect to cause her to write on an anti-Twilight forum.

Oh the Jealousy!

Thursday my friend E-Fabulous and her BFF are road tripping to Port Angeles and Forks for Bella’s birthday celebration. I couldn’t be happier for them, or more jealous of them. I’m the one who gave them Twilight! I should be going! Whaaa! Oh well, I’ll be there in a way. I’ve sent them with a photo scavenger hunt. They are tasked to go forth and take pictures that will amuse and delight me. I can’t wait to post some! I’ve also asked for a postcard from Forks and a May The Forks Be With You t-shirt from Dazzled By Twilight. Have fun, girls!

Congrats, My Friends!

Congrats to my friends at LTT! I’m very excited for you!

And I also love you, the awesome Twilight (and maybe a few Hosts, too) fandom. I stalk your websites all the time—you guys are hilarious (I recently added LTT to my stalk list; thanks for the laugh lines, ladies). I’m looking forward to seeing some of you in November for a little movie release that I’m excited about. Too many months to go!

Love,
Steph

Steph, I’m so glad you found them. They really are hilarious, aren’t they?

Eclipse Casting Complete

Acting411 has now posted that casting for Eclipse is complete, and in fact rehearsals started weeks ago. I was wondering about that when August 1 rolled around. They are slated to begin filming in 2 days. Sorry, all you Bree hopefuls out there. Canadian hopefuls, at least, have a shot at being extras. Being in Vancouver would be a plus I would imagine. Check out my Auditions page for details.

Thoughts on the Eve of Comic-Con 2009

Dear New Moon,

Are you worried that you won’t be given the same attention Twilight was given at Comic-Con? I am. Sure, I felt I had already seen Twilight by the time I saw Twilight, with all the video that was posted on YouTube, but spoilers aside, it was fun feeling like I was part of the process. New Moon, you are my favorite of the Twilight Saga. It’s so unfair that they have kept us apart the way they have these many months, being stingy with their news, withholding video from the set, and in general being all closed off and selfish. There are even fewer and fewer blurbs about you in Entertainment Weekly (I bought a subscription just for you) and the folks over there are whores for all things Twilight. I can only hope that at this week’s Comic-Con there will be some great videos of you posted online, especially of the panel, with which I can SQUEE vicariously. I won’t be there again this year, so vicariously is all I have.
Counting the days until we’re together,
Rabbit

On Vampire Lore

I read a lot online about how Stephenie Meyer’s Twilight sucks because it goes against vampire canon. I have to wonder how much the people who say this actually know about vampire lore. I’ve read lots of books and seen lots of movies. Just how many, I have no idea. Vampires have been a favorite of mine for as long as I can remember. I’ve never liked the ugly, pure evil, demonic, Nosferatu types. Yep, it’s a demon. Clearly we’re not letting that one in. Stake it if you can. A little too straight forward and blunt for me. I’m not a fan of horror for horror’s sake. For me it’s always been about the sexy ones. That’s where the true terror is. Demons who are good-looking, to whom you might be attracted, with whom you might be friends, who might just kill you, now that’s scary to me. It gives me more to think about. There just tends to be more story there.

Already we are talking about two very different types of vampires. How can canon reconcile this? To understand this I think you have to understand a bit about the history of vampire lore.

In the beginning, vampires were generally undead, walking corpses bent on stealing your life force, usually blood. Most cultures have some form of vampire legend. According to Wikipedia the term vampire did not become popular until the early 18th Century though. At that time there was an increase in vampire superstition in Western Europe from places in Eastern Europe where vampire legends were frequent, such as The Balkans.

Different traditions say different things. The vampire might be a soul not at rest who rises from the grave to cause mischief. It might be a person who made a pact with a sorcerer or witch, trading their soul for immortality or some such thing. It might also be the sorcerer or witch him- or herself. This is what people really thought back in the day. It is largely thought that because graves weren’t marked incredibly well that when bodies were exposed, either through the digging of the new grave or by animals digging, people thought they were seeing vampires who had left their graves. During decomposition hair and nails appear to grow. It’s really just the skin receding, but it gives the appearance of growth, giving anyone not educated in these matters thoughts of the ‘living dead’. Furthermore, gases bloating the body and fluids escaping through the mouth give the impression of the belly being full, having feasted on flesh or blood. Worse yet, the death shroud, being exposed to these fluids, would have been eaten by microbes first, giving the appearance that the corpse itself ate the shroud.

Pretty gruesome stuff, huh? At least it makes sense how we got the whole image of vampires as ugly demons. What about the sexy vampire though? Where does that come from?

Chemisty On Demand

Thanks mabelyeunice!

I missed the awards (sad face) so I appreciate the speedy posting of clips to the interwebs.

Now, why would you ever shoot these two separately when they can muster such chemistry on demand? BTW, I called Best Kiss during the midnight show. 🙂
